Mill Creek Anagama
In the summer of 2002 Simon designed and built a 200 cubic
foot anagama. This kiln was built with the help of Pat Dugan,
Careen Stoll, Lloyd
Cledwyn, Joe Singewald, Baird Morgan, Jay
Jenson, Carey Macdonald, and Nathaniel Posner. The design
of this kiln is unique, it is easy to load, and holds a large
amount of ware.
I designed my anagama to be taller and wider than most in
order to draw the flame up and out, resulting in a more laconic
flame path. This is directly apparent in the way the flame
wraps around the pots rather than leaving a shiny side and
a dry side. I also designed ways to allow air into the middle
of the kiln offering different firing options. The height
of the kiln also makes it easier to load. I have built three
additional anagamas this past year and pictures of all are
located on these pages.
